What Is RSVP? How to Use RSVP for Your Wedding Invitation
· 4 min read
What Is RSVP?
RSVP is an abbreviation of the French phrase "Répondez s'il vous plaît," meaning "please respond." When RSVP appears on an invitation, the invited guest is expected to indicate whether or not they will attend the event.
In wedding planning, an RSVP system lets you know in advance how many people will attend. This information is critical for the meal count, seating arrangement, catering planning and venue capacity.
Why Is RSVP Important?
Meal and Catering Planning
Wedding meals are calculated per person. Without knowing the number of attendees, it's impossible to order enough food. Over-ordering means major extra cost, while under-ordering means unhappy guests.
Seating Arrangement
Especially for formal weddings with pre-assigned tables, you need to know exactly whose seat is whose.
Budget Control
Since the average cost per guest is factored in, the exact attendee count directly affects budget planning.
Avoiding Last-Minute Surprises
An unexpected number of guests strains both venue capacity and the flow of the event.
Traditional RSVP vs. Digital RSVP
Traditional RSVP
In the past, a small card included with the invitation was mailed back in an envelope. Today it's usually done by phone call or WhatsApp message. But this method has downsides:
- Tracking responses becomes difficult
- It's unclear who has responded and who hasn't
- The process is tiring and time-consuming
Digital RSVP
On platforms like Rose Davet, guests fill out a form on the invitation page:
- Full name
- Attendance status (Attending / Not attending / Maybe)
- An optional note
All responses are automatically listed in the panel. You can export them as CSV and open them in Excel.
How Far in Advance Should the RSVP Deadline Be?
- **Standard weddings:** 3-4 weeks before the wedding
- **Large events:** 5-6 weeks before
- **Destination weddings (out of town/abroad):** 6-8 weeks before
State the RSVP deadline clearly on your invitation: "Please respond by August 1."
What to Do About Guests Who Don't Respond
Send a brief reminder 1-2 weeks after sending the invitation to those who haven't responded. A polite message like "Did you get the invitation? Could you let us know if you'll be attending?" is enough.
With the Rose Davet panel, you can easily see who has and hasn't responded, and quickly put together your reminder list.
How to Enable RSVP on Rose Davet
1. Open your invitation in the panel
2. Turn on the "RSVP" toggle in the "Edit Content" section
3. Guests fill out the form on the invitation page
4. You see all responses in the panel and can download them as CSV
Plus, the RSVP system requires no additional fee — it's included in every plan.
